The controller performs key functions in overseeing accounting-related activity. The controller is responsible for managerial and high-level accounting and finance activities among other functions. A controller performs several duties, some of which are:
- Budget preparation and outlining all the different budget schedules within a company
- Monitoring and reporting variances as well as investigating deficiencies
- Working with external auditors to ascertain that appropriate standards for reporting are used
- Training your personnel
- Implementing and monitoring internal controls over financial reporting
- Monitoring and staying updated with legislation that may affect taxation and operations
- Preparing and filing federal, state, and industry taxes
